Beginning

In the wild heart of Central India, where teak forests go on forever and alarm calls ring out through the jungle, one tigress stood out from the rest—not just because she was the strongest, but because she had an amazing legacy.

Collarwali (T-15), the Super Mom of Pench, was more than just a tiger; she changed the way people saw Pench Tiger Reserve. Her story is true, written down, and deeply connected to the land you see on a Pench safari today.

Early Life: Born Strong

Collarwali was born in Pench around 2005 into a strong family. Her mother, the famous tigress Badi Mada, was the most powerful tigress in the area.
Collarwali had a great start because she grew up in a forest full of chital, sambar, and wild boar. She picked up skills quickly, like stalking, hunting, and finding her way around. These are all important skills for staying alive in the wild.
She left her mother when she was about 2.5 to 3 years old and started to claim her own territory. This is one of the most important and dangerous times in a tiger’s life.

The Word “Collarwali”

In 2008, forest officials put a radio collar on her so they could keep an eye on her and do research. This was done to help scientists learn more about how tigers move, where they live, and how they breed.
From that point on, people called her Collarwali, which means “the one with the collar.”
What started as a scientific name quickly became a name that everyone in India’s wildlife community knew.

A Hard Start

Her first try at being a mother ended in tragedy.
She had her first litter of cubs in 2008, but none of them lived. Harsh weather and lack of experience were factors, which is common in the wild but still very bad.
For a lot of tigresses, this kind of loss means they can’t have any more babies.
It was a turning point for Collarwali

.The Rise of the Super Mom

Collarwali did something amazing over the next ten years that you don’t see very often in the wild.

She had a Cubs:
29 baby Cubs
Over 8 litters
This made her one of the most successful tigresses ever seen in India.

In 2010, she had five cubs in one litter, which is very rare. This was one of her most amazing achievements.
Even more impressive was how she was able to raise a lot of these cubs to be independent, even though she had to deal with predators, territorial disputes, and environmental stress.

What Made Her Stand Out

Collarwali’s success wasn’t just based on numbers; it was also based on smarts, flexibility, and gut feelings.
She picked areas carefully that had:
Thick plants for the safety of the cubs
Water sources that are dependable
Lots of food
She often moved her cubs to keep them safe and let them become independent at a young age, which made them more likely to live.
She was one of the most often seen and photographed tigresses in Pench because she was calm around safari routes, which is not something that many wild tigers are known for.

The Pench Tiger Reserve’s Face

For years, Collarwali was the name of the Pench Tiger Reserve.
People from all over the world came to see her in the wild, including tourists, photographers, and wildlife filmmakers.
Not only were her sightings exciting, they were also moving. Visitors never forgot the times they saw her walk gracefully through the forest or care for her cubs.
She was a big part of:
More tourists coming to Pench
Getting the reserve known around the world
Raising awareness about saving tigers

The Last Chapter

Collarwali died of natural causes related to old age on January 15, 2022. She was between 16 and 17 years old, which is a long life for a wild tigress.
Her death signaled the end of a time.

Forest officials held a ceremonial farewell, which is a rare and very respectful thing to do. People from all over the country sent in tributes, including wildlife lovers, forest staff, and conservationists.
It was a reminder that Collarwali was more than just a tiger; she was a symbol.
Her Legacy Lives On Collarwali is still a part of Pench today.
A lot of her cubs and their children now live in different parts of the reserve. Her family line is still doing well and is a big part of the tiger population in the area.
